Introduction, Beginnings, and Miscellaneous Things

I finally made the trek to the National Museum of Naval Aviation at Pensacola. Unfortunately all the outdoor displays were unavailable due to construction work, and I couldn't get a seat on the bus to the restoration building. Oh well, save them for the next trip.

It's a great museum -- it's more a history display than a museum, along the lines of the Smithsonian. The USAF Musem at Wright-Patt does a much better job of presenting the history. Be that as it may, the exhibits are well displayed and well lit for photography -- as opposed to the old & new "tombs" of the Smithsonian and the new buildings at WP. I took all these photos without flash or tripod (as will be seen in a couple).

OK, here they are - mostly unedited. Over the next week I'll be doing some rearranging and commenting. I wanted to get them up so you can see; I'll let you know when they're in final shape.

The Birth of Naval Aviation

18 Jan 1911. Eugene B. Ely flies a Curtiss Pusher Biplane onto a temporary deck on the Pennsylvania then, later that day, flies it back off. This is a replica, I believe. It rotates and I didn't do too bad "boxing" ther compass as it went around. Given the rotation, I didn't bother trying for lots of detail shots.

WW2 K-47 Airship, Post-War Gondola

I took most these pix before I read the plaque. I thought maybe this was a WW2 configuration that might have operated off the coast against U-Boats and thus been of interest for the Dare County Airport Museum. It's not, but it's still interesting. Can't be but a crew of maybe four, but they've got a nice cooking stove -- it was hard to get good pix inside the gondola.
